Hadith 5669

´It was narrated from Abu Bakr bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Harith that his father said:` "I heard 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, say: 'Avoid Khamr for it is the mother of all evils. There was a man among those who came before you who was a devoted worshipper. An immoral woman fell in love with him. She sent her slave girl to him, saying: We are calling you to bear witness. So he set out with her slave girl, and every time he entered a door, she locked it behind him, until he reached a beautiful woman who has with her a boy and a vessel of wine. She said: 'By Allah, I did not call you to bear witness, rather I called you to have intercourse with me, or to drink a cup of this wine, or to kill this boy.' He said: 'Pour me a cup of this wine.' So she poured him a cup. He said: 'Give me more.' And soon he had intercourse with her and killed the boy. So avoid Khamr, for by Allah faith and addiction to Khamr cannot coexist but, one of them will soon expel the other."

Explanation & Benefits

(1) "Started pursuing him" means she fell in love with him, or she became intent on leading him astray.

(2) "Give me the glass to drink"—he thought that among the three, this was the lesser sin, and that committing it would be permissible to save his life, or that there is allowance to commit a lesser sin to avoid a greater one.

(3) "Give me more to drink"—because one sip of wine (khamr) leads to another, until the one who drinks it once becomes accustomed to it.

(4) "He killed"—in his intoxication, he lost control over his intellect, committed adultery (zina), and then, out of fear that his secret would be revealed, killed the boy as well.

(5) "Will expel it"—if faith (iman) is strong, then after drinking once, it will not allow the person to drink again; but if faith is weak, then wine (khamr) will gradually expel faith from him, meaning that person will abandon all acts of faith. This is why wine has been called "the mother of all evils," that is, the root and source of all corruption, vices, and legal and moral sins. The one who habitually drinks it not only loses all legal and moral virtues, but also exits the realm of humanity and enters the realm of animality.

(6) The misfortune of drinking wine (khamr) is that it removes faith (iman) from a person's heart and mind, and this is a terrifying calamity. If a person does not possess wealth, what greater misery and wretchedness could there be than this?
