´'Abdullah bin Buraidah (narrated) from his father that:` While the Messenger of Allah [SAW] was walking, he approached some people and heard a confused noise coming from them. He said: "What is this noise?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, they have a drink that they drink." He sent for those people and said: "In what do you soak (fruit - to make that drink)?" They said: "We soak (fruits) in vessels carved from wood and gourds, and we have no water skins (that can be closed)." He said: "Do not drink except from a vessel that can be tied closed." Then as much time as Allah willed passed, then he went back to them and they had fallen sick and become pallid. He said: "Why do you look so ill?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, our land is unhealthy and you forbade to us everything except that which was in a vessel that could be tied closed." He said: "Drink, but every intoxicant is unlawful."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) In this hadith, the abrogation of the previous prohibition and restriction is mentioned. Previously, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had instructed them to prepare nabidh in such vessels whose mouths could be tied and sealed with straps or thread, etc. Then, later on, he relaxed this restriction and only maintained the prohibition that every intoxicating drink is unlawful (haram).
(2) Among the harms of wine and other intoxicating substances are the following: causing commotion and uproar, uttering delirious speech, speaking loudly, violating sanctities, displaying indecency and waywardness, becoming a manifestation of madness and infatuation, following desires, and becoming shameless.
(3) Intoxicating drinks and foods are also unlawful (haram) because their use impairs human intellect and consciousness, whereas Allah, the Exalted, has created humans as beings of intellect and awareness. In human dignity and perfection, intellect and reason play a very significant role; rather, it is due to the distinction of intellect and consciousness that humans are set apart from other living beings. And intoxication is the enemy of intellect; therefore, it is unlawful (haram).
