أَخْبَرَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ ، قَالَ : أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَا تَجْمَعُوا بَيْنَ التَّمْرِ ، وَالزَّبِيبِ ، وَلَا بَيْنَ الزَّهْوِ وَالرُّطَبِ " .
´'Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrated from his father that:` The Prophet [SAW] said: "Do not combine dried dates with raisins, nor Az-Zahuw with ripe dates."

Bukhari — Hadith 5602
Narrated Abu Qatada: The Prophet forbade the mixing of ripe and unripe dates and also the mixing of dates and raisins (for preparing a syrup) but the syrup of each kind of fruit should be prepared separately. ( One may have such drinks as long as it is fresh )

Hadith Commentary:
Preparing nabidh by mixing ripe and semi-ripe dates, or similarly by making juice from mixing raisins and dates, is prohibited because doing so causes the mixture to ferment quickly and the drink soon becomes intoxicating. Therefore, this type of nabidh has been forbidden.
If nabidh is prepared from these items separately, then there is no harm.

Muslim — Hadith 5154
Abu Qatadah (RA), on the authority of his father, reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said this: Do not prepare Nabidh by mixing nearly ripe dates and fresh dates together, and do not prepare Nabidh by mixing grapes and dates together, but prepare Nabidh from each (one of them) separately.

Nasai — Hadith 5570
´Yahya narrated that 'Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah said to him from his father, that:` The Prophet [SAW] forbade mixing Az-Zahuw and dried dates, and mixing Al-Busr and dried dates, and he said: "Soak each one of them on its own in vessels that are tied shut."

The purpose of the chapter is that nabidh should be prepared in leather waterskins instead of earthenware pots and the like (only the mouth of a leather waterskin can be tied). Intoxication develops quickly in pots, especially those coated with tar.
