Hadith 5467

´Muslim - meaning bin Abi Bakrah - narrated that:` He heard his father say following the prayer: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wal-faqri, wa 'adhabil-qabri (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from Kufr, poverty and the torment of the grave.)" I started to recite them and he said: "O my son, where did you learn these words?" I said: "O my father, I heard you saying this supplication at the end of the prayer, and I learned them from you." He said: "Continue to recite them, O my son, for the Prophet of Allah [SAW] used to say this supplication at the end of the prayer."

Brief Explanation
1؎ : In the hadith, the word «دبر الصلاۃ» is used, which can mean "after the prayer" as well as "at the end of the prayer." This word has been used in both senses. However, according to Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, the acceptance of supplication (du'a) before the salutation (salam) is more expected compared to after the salutation, because before the salam, the servant is closer to Allah Ta'ala.

Urdu footnote:
The Arabic word "dubur" used here means both "after" and "end." Therefore, another possible translation is "at the end of the prayer," that is, among the supplications recited after sending blessings (salat) upon the Prophet, before the (final) salam. And Allah knows best.
