Hadith 5444

´It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Amr that:` The Prophet [SAW] used to seek refuge (with Allah) from four things: From knowledge that is of no benefit, from a heart that does not feel humble, from a supplication that is not heard, and a soul that is never satisfied.

Hadith Takhrij «
Brief Explanation
1؎: A member of the Ummah should seek refuge from these four things in this manner «اللٰھم إنی أعوذبک من علم لاینفع ومن قلب لایخشع ومن دعا لایسمع ومن نفس لاتشبع». Similarly, wherever it is mentioned further on that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to seek refuge from these things, one should use the singular first-person form, as in the next hadith «أعوذ من الجبن».
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Seeking refuge with Allah from these four things mentioned in the hadith is a recommended and desirable act.

(2) The apparent meaning is not intended; rather, the purpose is: O Allah! Make my knowledge beneficial, make my heart humble and submissive, accept my supplications, and make my soul content.

(3) The Prophet’s seeking refuge was for the instruction of the Ummah and to express servitude, otherwise he already possessed this protection. This indicates that a servant should always fear Allah and remain needy before Allah.

(4) By “beneficial knowledge” is meant acting in accordance with knowledge, because the very first benefit of knowledge should be to the scholar himself, then to others, such as through preaching and teaching, etc.

(5) By “acceptance of supplication” is meant attaining reward for it, not necessarily that the exact request be fulfilled, because in many matters this is not possible.

(6) By “a soul that is not satisfied” is meant a soul that is greedy and covetous; however, eagerness for knowledge and reward is a good thing. And Allah knows best.
