Hadith 5379

´It was narrated that Humaid bin Hilal said:` "Abu Rifa'ah said: 'I came to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] while he was delivering a Khutbah, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, a stranger has come to ask about his religion, for he does not know what his religion is." The Messenger of Allah [SAW] stopped delivering his Khutbah and turned to me. A chair was brought, and I think its legs were of iron. The Messenger of Allah [SAW] sat down on it and started to teach me what Allah has taught him, then he went and completed his Khutbah.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) This blessed hadith is evidence of the humility, magnanimity, and immense love and compassion of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) for the people of Islam. Furthermore, it is understood from this that people of knowledge should adopt an extremely gentle and compassionate attitude towards those who ask questions and seekers of knowledge. The thirst for knowledge of those who are eager for it should be quenched, and those who seek a fatwa should be given a correct and proper fatwa in accordance with the Book and the Sunnah, thus fulfilling the duty of religious guidance as it ought to be, just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) paused his blessed sermon to quench the intellectual thirst and longing of the questioner, taught him the knowledge of the Qur’an and Hadith, and then completed his sermon. Fidāhu abī wa nafsī wa rūḥī.

(2) The purpose of the chapter is that sitting on a chair while others are seated below is not prohibited if there is a need for it, for example: delivering a speech so that everyone can both hear and easily see. In any case, sitting on a chair does not necessarily entail arrogance.
