Hadith 537

´It was narrated that 'Aishah the Mother of the Believers said:` "The Prophet (ﷺ) delayed the prayer one night until most of the night had passed and the people in the Masjid had gone home to sleep, then he went out and prayed, and said: 'This is indeed its (prayer) time, were it not that I would impose too much difficulty on my Ummah.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
537. Commentary: "Much of the night"—by this is not meant the majority of the night, because after half the night, the time of permissibility no longer remains. In the authentic collections (Sahihayn: Bukhari and Muslim), the narrations explicitly state that half the night had not yet ended.
Therefore, what is meant here is a significant portion of the night. The original time intended is that, if sleep were not taken into consideration, the prayer should have been performed at midnight, just as the Zuhr prayer is performed at midday. However, taking sleep into account, its most virtuous time is up to one third of the night.
