أَخْبَرَنَا
قُتَيْبَةُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا
حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ
أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ
نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ
ابْنِ عُمَرَ : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ هَذِهِ الصُّوَرِ الَّذِينَ يَصْنَعُونَهَا يُعَذَّبُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ، يُقَالُ لَهُمْ : أَحْيُوا مَا خَلَقْتُمْ " .
´It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that:` The Prophet [SAW] said: "The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Breathe life into that which you have created.'"

“Create!”—and this is impossible, because no one other than Allah Ta’ala can do this. “Unquestionably, to Him belongs the creation”—an impossible command is given to punish someone, because in such cases the only purpose is to rebuke and punish, not to actually have the action performed or to seek obedience. And this is called “ta‘liq bil-muhal” (suspension upon the impossible).
