Hadith 5360

´It was narrated that An-Nadr bin Anas said:` "I was sitting with Ibn 'Abbas when a man from among the people of Al-'Iraq came to him and said: 'I make these images; what do you say concerning them?' He said: 'Come closer, come closer. I heard Muhammad [SAW] say: Whoever makes an image in this world will be commanded on the Day of Resurrection to breathe a soul into it, and he will not be able to do so."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Know that making and selling images of living beings and creatures with souls is forbidden (haram). Therefore, those men and women associated with the art of image-making, as well as those who engage in drawing images as a hobby, should seriously examine this dangerous occupation of theirs. Whether the image is made by hand or with a camera, whether it exists independently or is inscribed on something, the ruling is the same for all. Likewise, the photography and video filming that takes place on occasions such as weddings and other ceremonies is all impermissible (najaa'iz).

(2) Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu saw an artist painting on the wall of a house, so he narrated the following hadith. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saying: “Allah, the Exalted, says: Who can be more unjust than the one who tries to imitate My creation? Let them create a grain or an ant.” In another narration, the words are: “Let them create even a single seed.” See: (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 5953, and Kitab al-Tawhid, Hadith: 7559)

(3) Allah, the Exalted, has created beneficial images that speak, see, hear, understand, and move about, but image-makers create useless forms that can neither see, nor speak, nor hear, nor understand. What is the benefit of wasting one’s abilities on such futile works? Rather, this is ingratitude towards Allah, and a failed attempt to rival Him. That is why Allah, the Exalted, will become angry and will command them to blow a soul into them, which is beyond their ability.
