´It was narrated from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah that:` He entered upon Abu Talhah Al-Ansari to visit him (when he was sick), and he found Sahl bin Hunaif there. Abu Talhah told someone to remove a blanket from beneath him, and Sahl said to him: "Why do you want to remove it?" He said: "Because there are images on it, and the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said what you know concerning them." He said: "Did he not say: Except for patterns on fabrics?" He said: "Yes, but this makes me feel more comfortable."

Urdu footnote:
Although making images of inanimate objects is permissible, it is not allowed on a large scale such that it becomes a business or images of inanimate objects are made or hung everywhere for decoration, because Islam is a simple religion. It does not like extravagance. This is why Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu did not consider it appropriate to have images of inanimate objects even on his bedding, although they are permissible. Therefore, images drawn on cloth or paper are also only permissible if they are of inanimate objects. This is one interpretation of this narration. According to some researchers, even images of animate beings drawn on cloth are permissible, provided they are not intact but rather severed—meaning, for example, there is no head, or no torso, or no arms, or no legs. In other words, the cloth can be used by dividing the image into pieces. Or, the cloth or paper is in a place of disrespect, for example: it comes under the feet. Some scholars have tried to declare this widespread business permissible based on the words "raqaman fi thawb" (an image drawn on cloth), which nowadays has taken the form of art and fashion, and generally has become a means of nudity and obscenity. So, indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.
