´It was narrated from Abu Talhah that:` The Prophet [SAW] said: "The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) It is not permissible to keep a dog in the house. If it is kept out of necessity, it may be kept in fields and enclosures, but not in the house, because there is no use for it in the house. (For details, see ahadith 4281 to 4296.)

(2) By "picture" is meant an artificial image of a living being that is kept with honor and respect, whether it is in the form of a statue or drawn on paper, wall, or cloth. Whether it is made by hand or by some tool or machine, because pictures are made either without benefit or for the sake of veneration. In the first case, it is extravagance, which is forbidden, and in the second case, it is a prelude to shirk (associating partners with Allah). Whatever is sinful, its cause and means are also sinful. However, if a picture is for some benefit, for example: for identification, then there is no harm, because the Shariah does not oppose necessity. But it is necessary that it be kept only to the extent of identification, not made an adornment or a matter of pride, nor hung up out of respect. Similarly, pictures may be used for assistance in treatment and the like. If a person is compelled, then an unnecessary picture will not be a cause of sin for him, but the one who makes the picture or orders it will be guilty, for example: pictures on currency notes and newspapers. There is no real need for pictures on these things, but ordinary people are helpless in this matter because it is not possible to manage without these things. It should be remembered that where a picture is necessary, it should be limited only to the extent of necessity, for example: in an identification photo, it should be limited to the face only, not life-sized. Similarly, unnecessary pictures in which ordinary people are compelled should not be kept in places of respect, but rather placed below, where feet touch, and newspapers should be kept folded so that there is no impression of respect. (For more, see hadith: 4251.)

(3) By "angels" is meant the angels of mercy, otherwise the guardian and recording angels are present everywhere. The intent of this statement is the negation of mercy, which is the special characteristic of these angels.
