Hadith 5341

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا النَّضْرُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَتْ : سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : كَمْ تَجُرُّ الْمَرْأَةُ مِنْ ذَيْلِهَا ؟ قَالَ : " شِبْرًا " قَالَتْ : إِذًا يَنْكَشِفَ عَنْهَا ؟ قَالَ : " ذِرَاعٌ لَا تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَا " .
´It was narrated that Umm Salamah said:` "The Messenger of Allah [SAW] was asked how much a woman should let her hem drag. He said: 'A hand span.' She said: 'But then it will uncover her (feet).' He said: 'A forearm's length, and no more than that.'"

That is, permission was given to let it hang down to the length of one handspan.

Note:
(Based on the support from the aforementioned hadith of Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah, this hadith is also considered sahih li ghayrihi (authentic due to corroborating evidence); otherwise, in its chain of narration, ‘Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud’an is a weak narrator.)

By "one span" or "one hand" is meant the extent below the ankles.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes regarding this:
In summary, there are two states for men:
The recommended (mustahabb) state is that the lower garment (izaar) be raised up to the middle of the shin.
And the permissible (ja'iz) state is that it be up to the ankles (above them).
Similarly, there are two states for women as well.
The recommended (mustahabb) state is that it be one span more than the permissible state for men.
And the permissible (ja'iz) state is one hand, that is, two spans more than the permissible state for men. (Fath al-Bari: 10/320)
