Hadith Commentary:
In one narration, it is mentioned that Anas radi Allahu anhu saw the daughter of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Zaynab radi Allahu anha, wearing a striped silk shirt.
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Clothing, Hadith: 3598)
However, this narration is shaadh (anomalous).
In the preserved narration, the name of Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha is mentioned.
The ahadith clarify that gold and silk are forbidden (haram) for men and permitted (halal) for women. Thus, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam took silk in his right hand and gold in his left hand, then said:
“Indeed, these two are forbidden for the men of my ummah.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Clothing, Hadith: 4057)
In a hadith narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, he said:
“These two are lawful for the women of my ummah.”
(Musnad Ahmad: 4/392)
