Hadith 5229

´It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Ja'far said:` "The Messenger of Allah [SAW] stayed away from the family of Ja'far (when he died) for three days, then he came to them, and said: 'Do not weep for my brother after today.' Then he said: 'Call my brother's sons to me.' We were brought like little chicks, and he said: 'Call the barber for me.' Then he ordered that our heads be shaved."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) It is understood that, without wailing and lamentation, crying over the deceased and shedding tears—so long as it is not with a raised voice—is permissible. Likewise, being sorrowful and grieved over the deceased is also legally permissible. However, the permission for this mourning-related crying is only granted for up to three days. After three days, even this is not permitted. And Allah knows best.

(2) Hazrat Ja'far radi Allahu anhu was the elder brother of Hazrat Ali radi Allahu anhu and the paternal cousin of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Along with this, he was also his foster brother, because both the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and Ja'far al-Tayyar radi Allahu anhu were nursed by Thuwaybah, the slave woman of Abu Lahab. He accepted Islam in the early period, migrated to Abyssinia, and then migrated to Madinah al-Munawwarah. He was martyred in the Battle of Mu'tah. Radi Allahu anhu wa ardah.

(3) “Do not cry” does not prohibit crying absolutely, but rather refers to mourning, as is customary to mourn for three days after a death. People continue to come for condolences, and from time to time, sounds of crying are heard. Otherwise, tears can come at any time; no one has control over tears.

(4) There is no difference of opinion regarding the permissibility of shaving the head, whether for a child or an adult, provided that the entire head is shaved and tufts are not left.
