Hadith 522

´It was narrated that Abu Basrah Al-Ghifari said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in praying 'Asr in Al-Mukhammas. He said: 'This prayer was enjoined upon those who came before you, but they neglected it. Whoever prays it regularly will have a two-fold reward, and there is no prayer after it until the Shahid appears." And the Shahid is "the star." [1] [1] This is a statement of one of the narrators, and Allah knows best.

522. Commentary:

(1) The author rahimahullah means that stars begin to appear a little while after sunset, therefore Maghrib can also be performed late. However, there is weakness in this reasoning, because if this meaning were intended, then it would be obligatory to delay the Maghrib prayer, since before that the prayer is negated. Whereas the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum, due to the encouragement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, used to perform the supererogatory prayers immediately after the adhan at sunset. And this encouragement, according to the authentic hadith, refers to the time from sunset to the appearance of twilight, because sunset is the cause for the stars to become visible. Furthermore, by “star” is not meant all stars, but rather that bright star which becomes visible immediately with sunset. And Allah knows best.

➋ From this hadith, the virtue and greatness of the Asr prayer is known, that it was also made obligatory upon previous communities and they were commanded to guard it.

➌ For the one who consistently performs the Asr prayer on time, there is a double reward.
