English Translation:
Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah and Shu‘bah, both narrated this report from ‘Ata ibn as-Sa’ib, but Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah differed from Shu‘bah, and that is as follows: When Sufyan narrated from ‘Ata ibn as-Sa’ib, he said: “from ‘Ata ibn as-Sa’ib, from ‘Abdullah ibn Hafs”—that is, Sufyan named ‘Abdullah ibn Hafs as the teacher of ‘Ata. Whereas Imam Shu‘bah was uncertain about the name of ‘Ata ibn as-Sa’ib’s teacher: sometimes he said Abu Hafs ibn ‘Amr, sometimes Hafs ibn ‘Amr, and at times simply Ibn ‘Amr. And Allah knows best.
