(1) The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in its chain of transmission by the verifier of the book, whereas other scholars have deemed it authentic based on supporting evidences. In light of the proofs, this latter view is correct; therefore, despite the narration being weak in its chain, it is still actionable and authoritative. And Allah knows best. For details, see: Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba Sharh min al-Nasa’i: 38/158-161.
(2) “The color should be hidden”—It is understood from this that men’s perfume may have a slight color, provided it is not conspicuous from a distance, such as the color of musk. Similarly, if women’s perfume has a faint scent that is not noticeable to passersby, then there is no harm, because the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not negate it, but rather said it should be hidden. Thus, there is no harm in what is minimal.
(3) Perfume with color has been specified for women because veiling (hijab) is obligatory for them; therefore, they will not be seen by people, nor will the scent be perceived, so people’s attention will not be drawn to them. Whereas for men, veiling is not obligatory, so they have been prohibited from using colored substances.
(4) If a woman is in her husband’s house, does not go outside, and there is no coming and going of non-mahram men in the house, then she may be granted some allowance. However, this is an era of great temptation, so as a precautionary measure (sadd al-dhari‘ah), it is better to avoid it. And Allah knows best.
