´It was narrated from Masruq that:` A woman came to 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud and said: "I am a woman with little hair, is it alright for me to add extensions to my hair?" He said: "No." She said: "Is it something that you heard from the Messenger of Allah [SAW] or that you find in the Book of Allah?" He said: "No, rather I heard it from the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and I find it in the Book of Allah." And he quoted the Hadith.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) “I find it in the Book of Allah”—that is, in view of the general evidence of the Qur’an: ﴿And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it﴾, she considered the prohibition of attaching false hair to be a command of the Qur’an, because obeying the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) words is a command of the Qur’an. However, it is not correct to attribute issues deduced through one’s own ijtihad (independent reasoning) to Allah Ta’ala or to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam); for example, to say regarding analogical (qiyasi) issues that this is the command of Allah Ta’ala or His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is not correct. Therefore, it is very necessary to be cautious about this. And Allah knows best.
(2) This hadith appears in detail in Sahih Muslim. From this, it is understood that even a woman with few (short or sparse) hair cannot attach false hair, because this involves fabrication and deception. Also, there is no set limit for what constitutes “few” or “many” hair; in this way, every woman could claim that her hair is few. That which the Shari’ah has declared unlawful (haram) and prohibited remains unlawful and prohibited—there is absolutely no other opinion in this regard. And Allah knows best.
