´It was narrated that Sa'eed Al-Maqburi said:` "I saw Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan on the Minbar, holding a ball of hair such as women use. He said: "What is wrong with Muslim women who put such things (on their heads)? I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say: "Any woman who adds hair to her head that is not hers, it is something false, that she is adding to her head."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) From this hadith, it is understood that if a woman attaches artificial hair or the hair of another woman to her own natural and original hair so that her hair appears longer—as women used to do even in the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)—then such an act is religiously forbidden (haram) and impermissible.
(2) This blessed hadith also teaches that as long as a woman's hair remains on her head, it is subject to covering (purdah), and it is necessary to conceal it from non-mahram (unrelated) men. However, when the hair becomes separated (i.e., is cut off), it is neither necessary to destroy or bury it, nor is it obligatory to conceal it from non-mahram men, as is evident from the fact that Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) held a bundle of a woman's hair in his hand and even displayed it before the people.
(3) It is necessary to warn those who are engaged in sinful deeds and acts of disobedience before they fall into the pit of destruction and ruin, and also to frighten them with its dangerous consequences, so that they may be saved from the punishment of Allah Ta'ala and become travelers on the straight path (sirat al-mustaqim).
(4) During a sermon (khutbah), it is permissible to hold something in the hand to show to the people, and it is also permissible to narrate the incidents of destruction and ruin of Bani Israel or other nations for the sake of admonition, so that people may realize how dangerous and destructive the consequences of disobeying Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) can be.
(5) This refers to the era of the caliphate of Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) and his last Hajj; he had also visited Madinah Munawwarah at that time.
