Hadith 5070

´Ruwaifi' bin Thabit said:` "The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'O Ruwaifi', you may live for a long time after me, so tell the people that whoever ties up his beard, or twists it, or hangs an amulet, or cleans himself (after relieving himself) with animal dung or bones, Muhammad has nothing to do with him.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Using the bone of an animal and its dung for istinja (purification after relieving oneself) is prohibited, as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has forbidden it.

(2) One should especially avoid those actions for which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has expressed disavowal. What greater failure and loss could there be than for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to say that he is free from a certain person, that he has no connection with him? May Allah protect us from this.

(3) Perhaps, this was in fact a prophecy that he would live for a long time after me. And indeed, this is what happened. Rufa’i (radi Allahu anhu) passed away in 53 AH, and he is the last Companion to have died in Africa. The word “perhaps” is used here to express servitude, just as “in sha Allah” is said.

(4) “Tying knots in the beard,” as is commonly seen among Sikhs, or twisting the hair and tying it in knots in a similar manner—both forms are blameworthy. Some people twist and wrap their beard in such a way that even a large beard appears small and does not easily hang loose. Although apparently no knot is felt in the beard, the result is no different, so it is better to avoid this form of twisting as well. The Sunnah method for the beard is to comb it, that is, to leave it open. Twisting the beard and tying it up seems to be an unnecessary affectation, so it is better to avoid it. Some have interpreted this to mean that one should not play with the beard during prayer, or that before starting prayer, one should not tie a knot in the beard to protect it from dust, just as the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade tying up the hair of the head and gathering up the clothes. In other words, during prayer, one should not be preoccupied with protecting one’s body, etc., from dust, but rather one’s attention should remain on the prayer itself.

(5) “Tendi dali” refers to the sinew of the muscle of a slaughtered animal. It is very strong. It is tied to the ends of a bow so that, due to its elasticity, it helps in shooting arrows farther. In the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), people would have soothsayers recite incantations over the sinew and then wear it around their necks to protect themselves from the evil eye. Since soothsayers would recite polytheistic (shirk) words, this was prohibited.

(6) “Istinja with dung and bone”—because cleanliness is not achieved with these, it is prohibited to use them for istinja. Moreover, these are the food of the jinn. Dung, in any case, is like filth.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ It is forbidden to use dung and manure for istinja (purification after relieving oneself), because these are the food of the jinn. [سنن ابي داؤد، الطهارة، حديث : 39]
➋ Partnership business is permissible.
➌ Any shared item, no matter how insignificant, should be divided among the partners, provided that its parts are usable and the item itself is not wasted.
➍ It is not permissible to tie knots in the beard as the non-Arabs used to do, and as Sikhs do now, or to braid it in such a way that the hair becomes curly or appears short to onlookers. «والله اعلم»
➎ Some people used to tie a string to animals with the intention of warding off the evil eye, and it can also mean that it is impermissible to wear a religious cord (zunnar) like non-Muslims.
