Hadith 5066

´'Abdullah bin Mas'ud said:` "According to whose recitation do you want me to recite? Because I recited seventy-odd Surahs to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] when Zaid had two braids, and was playing with the other boys."

Urdu Footnote:
The intention of Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu is that he is among the earliest Muslims. He is a great reciter of the Qur'an, whereas Hazrat Zayd bin Thabit was just a child at the time of acceptance (of Islam). How can he be a greater reciter than me? The real matter is that Hazrat Abu Bakr, Hazrat Umar, and Hazrat Uthman radi Allahu anhum appointed Hazrat Zayd bin Thabit radi Allahu anhu to collect and arrange the Qur'an. He collected the Noble Qur'an with great diligence during the era of Hazrat Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, and during the era of Hazrat Uthman radi Allahu anhu, he arranged the Noble Qur'an in the dialect of Quraysh. The reason for appointing him to this important task was that he was young and quick-witted. He was a scribe of the Noble Qur'an. He was present between the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and Jibril Amin alayhis salam. In other words, he was the greatest scholar and knower of abrogating and abrogated verses (nasikh-mansukh), Qur'anic dialect, and the arrangement of the surahs. Furthermore, his memory was also strong, whereas Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu had recited the Noble Qur'an in the early period. Then, by the era of Hazrat Uthman radi Allahu anhu, he had become old. It is evident that the memory of an old person cannot be equal to that of a young person. However, Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu persisted in his view and continued to oppose the unanimously agreed-upon copy of the Qur'an by all the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum. This was his shortcoming, but due to his eminence, status, and greatness, he was excused and no harshness was shown to him. Radi Allahu anhu wa ardah.
