Hadith 5055

´It was narrated that Wa'il bin Hujr said:` "I came to the Prophet [SAW] and I had hair. He said: 'This is bad,' and I thought he meant me, so I cut my hair then I came to him. He said to me: 'I didn't mean you, but this is better.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The mentioned hadith and the chapter heading are not mutually compatible. However, this compatibility can exist if the chapter is titled as “al-Akhz min al-sha’r” (“Taking from the hair”), as in some manuscripts the heading is established with these very words. See (Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba Sharh Sunan al-Nasa’i: 38/18).

(2) This blessed hadith also clearly indicates the greatness of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum), in how they would comply with the command of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). When Wa’il ibn Hujr (radi Allahu anhu) heard the word “dhubab” (“filthiness”) from the blessed tongue of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he immediately went and had his long hair cut. He did this because he thought that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was criticizing his hair. Although the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not command him to cut his hair, he nevertheless praised the action of Wa’il (radi Allahu anhu).

(3) It is not appropriate to keep excessively long hair such that it exceeds the bounds of moderation. This is why the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) commended the act of Wa’il (radi Allahu anhu) in cutting his long hair, and the blessed hair of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself would not go below his blessed shoulders. Every person, and especially every Muslim, should emulate the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

(4) It is understood that cutting the hair is a good thing. Keeping very long hair is an imitation of women.

Benefits and Issues:
Long hair may be kept, as has been mentioned in the previous chapter regarding the hair of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
However, it is not permissible for men's hair to be below the shoulders.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had spoken regarding something else, but the Companion understood that it was said about his hair.

➋ The Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were so eager in obeying the command that they acted merely upon a gesture. They did not even consider it necessary to ask whom you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) were addressing or what you meant.

➌ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarded shorter hair as better and preferred it. From this, Imam Ibn Majah (rahimahullah) has deduced that it is disliked for a man to keep excessively long hair.

English translation:

It is difficult to maintain excessively long hair, and furthermore, it involves resemblance to women; therefore, it should be cut.
