Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) This blessed hadith indicates that actions are also included in what is termed “iman” (faith). This is the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah, and this is the truth, whereas some people do not hold this view.

(2) From this blessed hadith, it is also understood that modesty (haya) is a branch of faith, because modesty creates within a person the motivation for goodness and the urge to perform righteous deeds; a person refrains from matters contrary to faith and becomes a possessor of high morals and character.

(3) Faith (iman) has been likened to a tree, which is the name for the combination of root, trunk, branches, twigs, leaves, fruits, and flowers. Similarly, faith is also the name for a combination of many beliefs, actions, and morals. The status of belief is like the root; the status of the pillars is like the trunk and branches; other actions are like the twigs and leaves; and the status of morals is like the flowers and fruits. The corruption of belief manifests itself in actions and morals, just as the corruption of the seed and root affects every part of the plant, and the deficiency or excess in actions makes the tree deficient, and the corruption of morals affects the beauty of the tree.

(4) “More than seventy”—that is, faith is the name for a combination of many actions. The word seventy is also used to denote abundance. By saying “more,” further abundance is indicated. It is possible that a specific number is intended. “More” is the translation of “bid‘” which is used for numbers from three to nine.
