It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) performed Wudu', and when he had performed Istinja' he rubbed his hand on the ground.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
50. Commentary:
➊ Sometimes, washing with water does not remove the odor from the hand. By rubbing it on earth, the odor is eliminated, and if there is any greasy impurity, the grease is also removed. Nowadays, this purpose can be achieved by using soap and similar substances; earth is not necessary because the objective is cleanliness and purification.
➋ The status of the private part and the hand is not the same; therefore, special cleansing of the hand is necessary because the hand is also used for eating, drinking, reciting the Qur’an, and for supplications and other acts of worship.

Benefits and Issues:
After performing istinja (cleaning oneself after relieving oneself) in unpaved places, it is recommended (mustahabb) to further cleanse the hand by rubbing it on the ground, so that even the slightest trace of odor does not remain. And where soil is not available, soap will serve as its substitute.
