5. Commentary:

➊ The mouth becomes pure and clean through the use of the miswak, and a person becomes suited for supplication to Allah and the recitation of the Noble Qur’an. Angels draw near to him because they are disturbed by foul odors and by everything that disturbs humans. In one narration, it is mentioned that when a person recites the Qur’an, an angel comes and stands behind him and listens to the Qur’an. While listening, the angel draws so near that it places its mouth upon the mouth of the reciter; then, whatever verse the reciter recites enters into the angel. For this reason, it has been said: keep your mouth clean when reciting the Qur’an. [سلسۃ الأحادیث الصحیحۃ : 215 ، 214/3 ، حدیث : 1213]

➋ It is recommended (mustahabb) to use the miswak at all times.

➌ From a medical perspective, it is an excellent aid in digesting food.

➍ The purpose of this chapter is to show that the miswak is a virtuous thing, but it is not obligatory (fard), nor is it a component of ablution (wudu). However, it is certainly a means of attaining both religious and worldly benefits at the same time.
