Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) "Ayyam al-Tashreeq" refers to the 11th, 12th, and 13th days of Dhu al-Hijjah. Thus, this announcement was made on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada‘).
(2) "Only a believer"—that is, one whose faith has gone beyond the tongue and reached the heart. He alone is deserving of Paradise, and a sinful believer will, at some point, certainly enter Paradise; however, a disbeliever will never be able to enter Paradise.
(3) "Days of eating and drinking"—therefore, fasting should not be observed on these days.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The days of Tashreeq are the three days following Eid al-Adha, that is, the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah.
➋ Just as the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah (Eid al-Adha) is a day of sacrifice, these three days are also days of sacrifice. Therefore, it is permissible to offer the sacrifice until sunset on the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah. However, the greatest reward is for offering the sacrifice on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sacrificed one hundred camels on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, and all of them were sacrificed on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah.
➌ Fasting during the days of Tashreeq is prohibited because it is contrary to the joy of Eid.
➍ Whoever performs Hajj Tamattu‘ and does not have the means to offer a sacrifice, he may fast during the days of Tashreeq. Allah the Exalted has said:
(al-Baqarah: 196)
So whoever has taken advantage of the ‘umrah before the Hajj, let him offer whatever sacrificial animal is easy (for him), but whoever cannot find (or afford it), then let him fast three days during Hajj and seven when you return; these are ten complete (days).
➎ The days of Tashreeq are called the days of Mina because the pilgrims spend these days in Mina.
➏ Of the ten fasts that are an alternative to the sacrifice, the three fasts that must be observed during the days of Hajj should be kept before the Day of ‘Arafah. If those days pass, then they should be kept during the days of Tashreeq. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Fasting, Chapter: Fasting the Days of Tashreeq, Hadith 1997, 1998)
➐ To enter Paradise, merely expressing Islam with the tongue is not sufficient; rather, it is necessary to have the spirit of obedience to Allah’s commands in the heart and to express this practically as well. Deficiency in practice in faith becomes a barrier to immediate entry into Paradise. After suffering punishment in Hell or after obtaining forgiveness through Allah’s special mercy, entry into Paradise is possible. However, whoever commits major shirk and dies without repenting from this shirk and disbelief, he will be eternally in Hell.
