Hadith 4944

´It was narrated that 'Aishah said:` "The hand of the thief should not be cut off for anything less than a Hajafah or a Turs (two kinds of shields)," each of which was worth a (decent) price.

It is evident that, according to the standards of that era, three dirhams was a considerable amount. The meaning of the hadith is that the hand can be cut off even for the theft of something of minor value.
