´It was narrated that Ibn shihab said:` "I read the letter of the Messenger of allah which he wrote for 'Amr bin Hazm when he sent him to govern Najran. The letter was with Abu Bakr bin Hazm. The Messenger of Allah wrote this; 'A statement from Allah and His Messenger; O you who believe! Fulfill (your) obligations, and he wrote the Verses until he reached. Verily, Allah is Swift in reckoning. Then he wrote: 'this is the book if retaliation: For a soul, one hundred camels, '''' and so on
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Najran was a region in Yemen. In previous hadiths as well, the people of Yemen referred to are actually the people of Najran. There were three chiefs of three tribes there, the details of which have already been mentioned in Hadith number 4857. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent Amr ibn Hazm (radi Allahu anhu) as the chief supervisor.
(2) "A few verses" refers to the first four verses of Surah al-Ma'idah. Some legal rulings (ahkam) have also been mentioned in these verses.
(3) The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not know how to write. This is an absolute fact; therefore, wherever writing is mentioned, what is meant is dictating to others. He would always have others write for him.
(4) This narration is mursal, and the correct position of the hadith scholars (muhaddithin) regarding mursal narrations is that they are weak. However, the book of Amr ibn Hazm (radi Allahu anhu) was well-known in the early generations, and it also remained with his descendants. Furthermore, supporting evidence for the text of this narration is found in authentic (sahih) hadiths. Therefore, although the chain of this hadith itself may not be definitively classified as hasan or sahih, the rulings mentioned in it are valid for argumentation due to their corroboration by other hadiths.
