Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Although the fingers differ in terms of utility—the status of the thumb is not the same as that of the little finger—yet all of them give strength to one another. Furthermore, some fingers are a cause of adornment, some have special benefits, and in certain situations, only the little finger is useful, while the thumb cannot do anything there. In other words, it is very difficult for us to truly determine the precise benefit of each finger. Therefore, Allah, the All-Knowing and All-Aware, and His Messenger, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, have declared all the fingers equal—whether it is the right hand or the left, the fingers of the hand or the foot, the little finger or the thumb. And Allah knows best.

(2) “Ten camels each”: If a person’s both hands or both feet are cut off, then he is like a deceased person. He will become dependent on others, and his life will become worse than death. Therefore, the blood money (diyah) for both hands or both feet has been set at one hundred camels each. The blood money for one hand or one foot will be fifty camels, even if it is the left one, because without the left, even the adornment of the right is nullified. Moreover, the essence of the hand and foot lies in the fingers. If there are no fingers, the hand or foot is deprived of its primary purpose. Therefore, the fingers have been equated to the entire limb. However, if all five fingers are cut off, even then the blood money is fifty camels; if cut off from the wrist, then too; if cut off from the elbow, then too; and if cut off from the shoulder, even then the same blood money applies. And Allah knows best.
