Hadith 480

´It was narrated from 'Irak bin Malik that he heard that Nawfal bin Mu'awiyah said:` "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Among the prayers is a prayer which, if a person misses it, it is as if he has robbed of his family and his wealth." Ibn 'Umar said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'It is 'Asr prayer.'" Muhammad bin Ishaq contradicted him. [1] [1] That is, Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated it from Yazid bin Abi Habib with the following chain and wording, which differs with this narration, reported by Al-Laith from Yazid.

Brief Explanation
1؎: Here too, there is contradiction in both the chain of narration (isnad) and the text (matn). The contradiction in the chain is such that in the narration of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, it is stated that ‘Iraq heard from Naufal ibn Mu‘awiyah, whereas in the narration of Layth, it is stated that ‘Iraq received this information that Naufal ibn Mu‘awiyah said this. As for the text, Muhammad ibn Ishaq has considered it mawquf (stopped at the Companion), while Layth has considered it marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). There is no contradiction between mawquf and marfu‘, because sometimes a Companion narrates a marfu‘ report in the form of a fatwa (legal verdict) and does not attribute it to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and at other times he narrates it as marfu‘.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
480. Commentary: Muhammad ibn Ishaq and Layth are both students of Yazid ibn Abi Habib. Both differ in the narration of the chain (isnad) as well as in the narration of the text (matn). The difference in the chain is that in the narration of Layth, there is no explicit mention of hearing (sama‘) from ‘Iraq by Naufal, whereas in the narration of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, there is an explicit mention of hearing. The reconciliation has already been discussed in the previous explanation. The difference in the text is that the narration of Layth is marfu‘ (attributed to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), whereas the narration of Muhammad ibn Ishaq is mawquf, i.e., it is the statement of the Companion. However, there is no contradiction between them, because originally this is indeed the statement of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. The Companion also gave the same legal verdict (fatwa). It is evident that this is common. This does not create any doubt regarding the narration being marfu‘.
