Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
The aforementioned two narrations are both reported by Yahya ibn Sa‘id. The first narration he relates from ‘Awf ibn Abu Jamilah, whereas in the second narration, his teacher is Jam‘ ibn Matar al-Habti. The reason why this second narration is better and superior to the first one—Allah knows best!—is that Yahya ibn Sa‘id’s teacher, Jam‘ ibn Matar al-Habti, is better in narrating hadith than his teacher ‘Awf ibn Abu Jamilah. Regarding ‘Awf ibn Abu Jamilah, Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah says: [قَالَ بُنْدَارٌ… لَقَدْ کَانَ قَدَرِیًّا، رَافِضِیًّا، شَیْطَانًا] “Bundar (Muhammad ibn Bashar) said: … Without doubt, he (‘Awf ibn Abu Jamilah) was a denier of predestination (qadar), a Shi‘a Rafidi, and a devil.” See: (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib: 8/149). Imam Ibn al-Mubarak rahimahullah says that ‘Awf was not content with a single innovation, rather, there were two innovations found in him. One was that he was a Qadari, i.e., a denier of predestination (qadar), and the second innovation was that he was a Shi‘a and a Rafidi. (Reference as mentioned)
