Hadith 453

It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the prayers were enjoined in Makkah, and that two angels came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and took him to Zamzam, where they split open his stomach and took out his innards in a basin of gold, and washed them with Zamzam water, then they filled his heart with wisdom and knowledge.

453. Commentary:

➊ In the lengthy hadith of the Mi'raj, only the washing of the heart is mentioned. In this narration, other parts besides the heart are also mentioned. Thus, the main objective was the purification of the heart, and consequently, the veins and so on were also washed.

➋ In the first narration, it is mentioned that wisdom and knowledge were brought in a golden tray, while in this hadith, the tray is mentioned in connection with washing. It is possible for both things to be in the same tray. And it is also possible that two trays were brought: one filled with knowledge and wisdom, and the other for washing.

➌ The use of gold is prohibited for us, not for the angels; therefore, there is nothing objectionable in this.

➍ The Mi'raj, by consensus, took place during the Makkan period (although there is a difference of opinion regarding its exact date). The five prayers were made obligatory during the Mi'raj; therefore, the obligation of prayer, by consensus, occurred in the Makkan period.
