Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Imam Muhammad bin Muslim bin Shihab al-Zuhri rahimahullah narrates this hadith from three teachers, namely, Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, Abu Salamah, and Salim. However, the first two teachers (Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and Abu Salamah) narrate it from Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, and he from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, whereas the teacher Salim rahimahullah narrates this hadith from his respected father, Abdullah bin Umar radi Allahu anhu, and he from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. The meaning is that Ibn Shihab narrates this tradition with a connected chain (mawsulan) through both chains. In the first case, the hadith is from the Musnad of Abu Hurairah, and in the second case, from the Musnad of Abdullah bin Umar radi Allahu anhum.
(2) "Do not buy fresh dates in exchange for dry dates," because when both sides are of the same kind (genus), then excess or deficiency is not permissible; rather, equality is necessary in such a case. However, equality between dry and fresh dates is not possible, because fresh dates, when dried, decrease in weight. Therefore, they should be bought and sold separately.
