Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
English Translation:
The sacrificial animals can be camel, cow, goat, and sheep. Since not every person has the means for a large animal, sacrificing a smaller animal, that is, a sheep or goat, is also permissible, while sacrificing a cow or camel is recommended (mustahabb). Just as one sacrifice is obligatory (wajib), offering more is recommended (mustahabb). A cow is much larger than a goat, and a camel is considerably larger than a cow; therefore, a cow is considered equivalent (to several goats), as will be mentioned in the upcoming hadith, but the difference between a camel and a cow is clear, which even a child can perceive. Considering both as equal is a strange matter. The hadith of this chapter equates a camel to ten goats. As for the hadith mentioning seven, it does not negate more than seven, whereas the upcoming hadith is explicit about ten; therefore, it should be given preference. Some scholars have tried to reconcile by saying that the narration of ten is about general sacrifices, while the narration of seven is about sacrifices slaughtered in the Haram. Some scholars have considered a camel equivalent to ten sacrifices during travel, and to seven during residence, but all these are merely their own approaches and estimations. And Allah knows best.
