Hadith 4351

´It was narrated from Zahdam that:` Some chicken was brought to Abu Musa and a man moved away from the people. He said: "What is the matter with you?" He said: "I saw it eating something that I consider filthy, and I swore I would not eat it." Abu Musa said: "Come and eat, for I saw the Messenger of Allah eating it." And he told him to offer an expiation for his vow (Kafarat Al-Yamin)

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself ate the meat of chicken, therefore there is absolutely no harm in eating its meat. Some people keep themselves away from using such blessings of Allah because they consider it contrary to piety (taqwa). Remember, Allah Ta’ala does not desire such “blind” piety that clashes with the example of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam); rather, true piety is to benefit from and make use of Allah’s blessings, and to express gratitude for them as is their due.

(2) If any animal or bird eats so much filth that its effect is felt in the milk or meat of that animal, then such an animal should not be used until the effect of the filth (such as odor, etc.) disappears. When the effect of the filth is gone, then the meat and milk of such an animal or bird is, without hesitation, permissible and lawful to consume. However, if an animal eats a small amount of filth and its effect is not present in it, then there is no harm in eating it. The practice of Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (radi Allahu anhu) is a clear proof of this.

(3) The host should invite the arriving person to eat, seat him near himself, and present food to him, even if the food is little. When more people eat the food, there will be more blessing in it, because there is blessing in eating collectively.

(4) “I have seen him” does not refer to that specific chicken which was brought roasted, but is a general statement, meaning: chickens eat filth, therefore I do not eat its meat. The intention of Abu Musa (radi Allahu anhu) was that this is nothing new; chickens do eat some filth. Despite this, I have seen the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) eating chicken. It is understood from this that such a small amount of filth does not matter. However, if an animal eats so much filth that its color, odor, or taste is perceived in its meat or milk, then eating the meat or drinking the milk of such an animal is haram (forbidden). Anything less than this is not problematic. And Allah knows best.
