´It was narrated from Salim bin 'Abdullah that his father said:` "The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding livestock or a dog for hunting, one Qirat will be deducted from his reward each day." 'Abdullah said: "Abu Hurairah said: 'Or a dog for farming.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) By "hunting dog" is meant a dog that is actually used for hunting, that is, one with which hunting is carried out, not merely a dog of a hunting breed as is commonly understood nowadays. According to the Shariah, any dog can be a hunting dog if it is trained and taught for hunting. It should always be remembered that the hunting for which the dog is to be trained and disciplined is not for the mere sport of hunting animals like swine, etc., but rather for hunting lawful (halal) animals.

(2) Keeping a dog for racing is also a sin because Allah Ta'ala did not create the dog for running races. No benefit accrues to mankind from the dog’s running.

(3) A dog kept for guarding crops should remain in the field. Similarly, a dog kept for guarding livestock should stay with the animals. There is no use for them in the house. It is also better that the hunting dog, as far as possible, be kept outside the house.
