´It was narrated from Abu Salamah from 'Aishah, and, from 'Amr bin Sa'd, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar:` That 'Umar asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about Ghusl from Janabah - and the narrations agree on this - that one should start by pouring water on the right hand two or three times, then put the right hand into the vessel and pour water with it onto the private parts, with the left hand on the private parts to wash off whatever is there, until it is clean; then put the left hand on the dust if one wants to, then pour water over the left hand until it is clean; then wash the hands three times, (sniff water into the nose) and rinse the mouth, and wash the face and forearms, three times each until when reaching the head, he does not wipe the head, rather he pours water over it. This is how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed Ghusl according to what was mentioned.

422. Commentary:
➊ This hadith is narrated by two Companions, Aisha and Abdullah bin Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), and there are also narrations from other Companions (radi Allahu anhum) regarding the ritual bath (ghusl) of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Imam al-Nasa’i (rahimahullah) intends to show that all narrations (from these two Companions as well as from others) agree on the point that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would begin the ritual bath (ghusl) with cleansing the private parts (istinja) and performing ablution (wudu).
➋ The final words of this hadith: «فَهَكَذَا كَانَ غُسْلُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ۔ ۔ الخ» are also from Imam al-Nasa’i (rahimahullah), not part of the hadith itself.
➌ The right hand is to be washed first if it has impurity on it or if it is doubtful.
➍ “If he wishes”—this indicates that rubbing the hand on earth is due to necessity. If the impurity is sticky, then one may rub it on earth to remove the stickiness; otherwise, it is not necessary. Nowadays, soap serves as a substitute for earth.
➎ “Do not wipe (masah)”—because washing the head renders wiping (masah) unnecessary. In no hadith is there an explicit mention of performing masah during the ritual bath (ghusl); however, these words are found: «توضا وضوءہ للصلاة غیر رجلیه» “He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed the ablution for prayer except for his feet, meaning he did not wash his feet.” From these words, some have understood that masah should be performed, but here the exception is in regard to the limbs that are washed, and this is correct. In this hadith, it is explicitly stated: «لَمْ يَمْسَحْ» “Do not wipe (masah).” Whereas some scholars are of the opinion that both practices are transmitted from the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam): sometimes he would perform masah and sometimes he would leave it, as mentioned in the aforementioned narration. The apparent support for performing masah comes from these words: «توضا وضوءہ للصلاة غیر رجلیه». In any case, during the ritual bath (ghusl) for major impurity (janabah), it is not necessary to perform masah of the head while performing ablution (wudu) beforehand. And Allah knows best.
