Hadith 4216

´it was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said:` "You will become keen for positions of authority, but that will become a regret and loss. What a good life they will live, but how hard it will be for them when they die."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The relevance of the hadith to the chapter is absolutely clear: the greed and desire for leadership, that is, for power and authority, is religiously disliked and condemned.

(2) Through his aforementioned statement, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) intends to teach the ummah that any matter whose outcome involves pain, hardship, and distress should never be chosen for the sake of fleeting and perishable pleasure and comfort.

(3) This blessed hadith also makes it clear that, instead of pursuing worldly pleasures, one should strive to attain happiness in the Hereafter and seek deliverance from the punishment of the Hereafter, because the true purpose of life and real success is not the attainment of worldly pleasures, but rather protection from the punishment of the Hereafter and entry into Paradise.

(4) “Regret, shame, and remorse” — this will occur either in the Hereafter or even in this world, because when power is lost, one usually has to endure suffering. It is either the throne or the scaffold.

(5) “While suckling” — in the example mentioned in the hadith, leadership (emirate) is likened to a mother, and the one greedy for leadership to a child. As long as the mother is nursing, the child is very happy with her, but when she weans him, he becomes furious. The same is the case with power.
