´It was narrated from Tariq bin Shihab that:` a man asked the Prophet, when he had put his leg in the stirrup: "Which kind of Jihad is best?'" He said: " a word of truth spoken before an unjust rulers."
1؎: Tariq ibn Shihab radi Allahu anhu did have the honor of seeing the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, but he did not himself hear any hadith directly from him. His narrations are transmitted through another Companion, and the absence of the name of that Companion does not affect the authenticity of the hadith. This is because all the Companions (sahabah) are trustworthy (thiqat), and the omission of a known trustworthy narrator from the chain—especially if it is a Companion—does not impact the authenticity of the hadith, since all the Companions are trustworthy and upright (‘udul). Such a hadith, in which a Companion transmits a narration from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam without mentioning the intermediary Companion, is termed “mursal sahabi” in the terminology of the scholars of hadith, and the “mursal sahabi” is accepted and beneficial.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) This is considered the most virtuous jihad because in it, the loss of life is certain. Furthermore, in the battlefield, a person can at least defend himself, whereas here, even that is not possible. In every respect, one's hands are tied. And then, one is killed in a most brutal manner. There is no one to encourage such a person; rather, there are more people who reproach him.
(2) "Had placed his foot in the stirrup" means he was mounting the camel.
(3) "Oppressive ruler" refers to one who cannot tolerate the word of truth being spoken to him.
