Hadith 4201

´Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:` "The Imam is like a shield whose orders should be obeyed when they (the Muslims) fight, and where they should seek protection. If he enjoins fear of Allah and behaves justly, then he will be rewarded, but if he enjoins otherwise, then it will be a burden (of sin) on him."

Brief Explanation
1؎: That is, war is waged according to his opinion and under his leadership.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) After the determination and clarification of the rights and duties of the leader and imam, whoever deviates from or transgresses them will be sinful. If the imam fulfills his duties with justice and fairness, he will be deserving of great reward, and if he acts with oppression and injustice, he will be deemed sinful in the sight of Allah.

(2) It is clear from the blessed hadith that the imam should be made a shield, and that evil, discord, and corruption should be avoided through the imam. His just decisions in all matters should be accepted, and he should be obeyed; under no circumstances should he be deprived of cooperation, nor should he be left helpless in any situation. He should not be abandoned out of fear for one's own destruction, and so on. Some scholars have said that the legitimate leader and ruler is a shield for the people in such a way that, as long as he is present, no one oppresses another, and the enemy also remains fearful of him; therefore, it is the duty of all Muslims to protect this shield. Some have said that the meaning of "fighting behind him" is that the imam should be kept in a secure place; another meaning is that the imam himself should be in the front ranks of the fighters and bravely fight the enemy. Both meanings are correct, because in some instances a secure place was made for the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), from where he would observe the battlefield and issue commands accordingly, and in some instances it is established that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) fought in the front ranks; when the battle would intensify, the Companions would make him a shield for themselves.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: (I forgot such-and-such verse)

From saying this, it is established that in forgetting the Noble Qur’an, a person himself is involved. He neglected the recitation of the Noble Qur’an and was careless and deficient in repeating it, and as a result of his inattentiveness and heedlessness, he forgot some part of the Noble Qur’an. Thus, this neglect and deficiency in reciting the Noble Qur’an, and not safeguarding and preserving it, is an extremely disliked act. Therefore, the main objective is not the dislike or reprehensibility of using this word itself, but rather the condemnation of those causes and reasons due to which there arose a need to say this word.

And (rather, he forgot) means that this is the punishment for his crime, fault, or for not safeguarding and preserving the recitation of the Qur’an. If he had not been negligent and heedless in this matter, he would not have received this punishment.

Just as a camel tries to break its rope and hobble so that it gets a chance to run away, in the same way, the Noble Qur’an desires to be safeguarded and attended to in its recitation; otherwise, it escapes from the chest of the memorizer.

Just as the owner of the camel makes every effort that the camel’s rope does not break, similarly, the memorizer should make every effort that there is no interruption in safeguarding and maintaining the recitation of the Qur’an, and that this continuity and connection is not broken.

Benefits and Issues:
Imam means leader.
And the leader is a symbol of the dignity and grandeur of Islam and the Muslims.
He arranges measures to protect them from enemies.
And he also maintains peace and security among them.
Therefore, it is necessary that all people honor the covenants and agreements made with the disbelievers.
