Hadith 4147

´It was narrated that 'Ata' said concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime:` "And know that whatever of spoils of war that you may gain, verily, (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allah, and to the Messenger, and to the near relatives (of the Messenger (Muhammad)" "The Khumus (one-fifth) of Allah and of His Messenger is the same. The Messenger of Allah used to provide mounts (for jihad) with it, and give some (to the poor), and distribute it however he wanted, and do with it whatever he wanted."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
Benefit: “It is only one” means that the mention of Allah, exalted is He, is for the sake of blessing (tabarruk). Allah, exalted is He, does not have a separate share; rather, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had complete authority over the khums. Some are of the opinion that Allah’s share should be spent on the House of Allah (Bayt Allah). The purpose of mentioning this hadith here is to clarify that the entire khums was entrusted to the discretion of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). No one else had an assigned share in it. After his passing, this authority belonged to the ruler of the time.
