Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
The chain of narration of the aforementioned report (4037) from Sunan al-Nasa’i shows that Muhammad bin Abd al-A‘la narrates from Yazid bin Zuray‘, and he from Shu‘bah, meaning that Yazid’s teacher is Shu‘bah. Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah states that the teacher of Muhammad bin al-Muthanna also narrated from Abd al-A‘la from Shu‘bah. This chain is found as such in Sunan al-Nasa’i (al-Mujtaba), whereas in Sunan al-Nasa’i (al-Kubra), instead of “Shu‘bah” it is “Sa‘id”, and “Sa‘id (bin Abi ‘Arubah)” is the correct one, while “Shu‘bah” is a scribal error (tasheef). This is also supported by the agreed-upon narration found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, because in them as well, it is “Sa‘id” and not “Shu‘bah”. See: (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Chapter: The Story of ‘Ukl and ‘Uraynah, Hadith: 4192, and Sahih Muslim, al-Qasamah wa al-Muharibin, Chapter: The Ruling on Highway Robbers and Apostates, Hadith: 1671)
