Hadith 4017

´It was narrated from 'Ubaid bin 'Umair that :` His father - who was one of the Companions of the Prophet [SAW] - told him: "A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what are the major sins?' He said: 'They are seven; the most grievous of which are associating others with Allah, killing a soul unlawfully and fleeing (from the battlefield) on the day of the march.'" It is abridged.

Explanation & Benefits

(1) The researcher of the book has declared the mentioned narration weak in terms of its chain of transmission, whereas other scholars, such as the hadith scholar of our era, Allamah Albani and Allamah Atiyubi, etc., have graded it as hasan (good). In light of the evidences, their opinion appears to be closer to correctness. For details, see: (Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba Sharh Sunan an-Nasa’i: 31/296-298).

(2) Its details are found in another narration. A Companion asked the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam): O Messenger of Allah! How many are the major sins? The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied: “They are nine. The greatest among them is associating partners with Allah, and (the others are:) killing a believer unjustly, fleeing from the battlefield on the day of battle, accusing a chaste woman of immorality, practicing magic, consuming the wealth of an orphan, consuming usury, disobeying Muslim parents, and fighting in the House of Allah (the Ka‘bah)…” For further details of the narration, see: (al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim: 1/59, and as-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi: 10/186).
