´It was narrated that An-Nu'man bin Bashir said:` "We were with the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and a man came and whispered to him. He said: 'Kill him.' Then he said: 'Does he bear witness to La ilaha illallah (there is none worthy of worship except Allah)?' He said: 'Yes, but he is only saying it to protect himself.' The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Do not kill him, for I have been commanded to fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah, and if they say it, their blood and their wealth are safe from me, except for a right that is due, and their reckoning will be with Allah.'"
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) "Engaged in secret conversation" means regarding another person, such as saying that he did this or that action. And Allah knows best.
(2) "Kill him" refers to the person about whom the complaint was made. However, it was later discovered that he had recited the testimony of faith (kalimah) and had become a Muslim, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam withdrew his initial command, because it is unlawful to kill a Muslim.
(3) In this, there is a warning for those who, due to some interpretative beliefs of Muslims, consider them disbelievers (kafir) and deem their killing permissible, even considering it a virtuous act. Remember, the implementation of the limits set by Allah (hudud Allah) is the responsibility of the government, not of individuals, and in Islam, apart from the prescribed limits, killing any Muslim due to a belief or action is a grave sin. The killer will be in Hell, no matter how attractive the slogan on the basis of which he kills.
(4) "The reckoning is upon Allah ta'ala" because this is His prerogative, not ours. Apart from the prescribed legal limits (hudud shar‘iyyah), the punishment for other beliefs and sins is entrusted to Allah ta'ala. We cannot interfere in this.
(5) If any Muslim commits shirk (associating partners with Allah) or kufr (disbelief), he will be invited to Islam and the proof will be established against him. If he persists in his shirk or kufr, then the Islamic court will issue the order for his execution.
