Hadith 3898

´It was narrated that Mujahid said:` "I took Tawus by the hand and brought him to Ibn Rafi' bin Khadij, and he told him, narrating from his father, that the Messenger of Allah forbade leasing land. Tawus rejected that and said: 'I heard Ibn 'Abbas (say) that he did not see anything wrong with that.'"

Brief Explanation
1؎ : In all the previous chains of transmission, between Mujahid and Rafi‘, there is either the intermediary of Usayd ibn Rafi‘ ibn Khadij or Usayd ibn Zuhayr, one of the two; and in this chain, this intermediary is omitted, therefore this chain is disconnected (munqati‘). However, by being supported through corroborating narrations (mutaba‘at), this narration is also authentic (sahih).
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
It is as if the prohibition of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to Hazrat Rafi‘ was specific to those like him—large landowners or those who leased land on oppressive conditions—and was not general. Otherwise, the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would not have leased land on sharecropping after his (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passing. And this is a correct inference.
