Hadith 3800

´It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:` "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Do not swear by your fathers, nor by your mothers nor by the idols. Swear only by Allah, and do not swear unless you are sincere.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The word "andad" has been used, by which is meant those things that people consider as deities or treat in a manner befitting a deity, whether they are living or dead, animate or inanimate. Since, at that time, idols were commonly worshipped, this meaning has been derived. It should also be remembered that idols were, in fact, statues of some pious people; otherwise, polytheism was not limited to the worship of stones alone.

(2) Although it is prohibited to swear by anything other than Allah, swearing by idols or well-known deities is outright polytheism (shirk), because it constitutes resemblance to the polytheists. Swearing by Prophet Isa (alayhis salam) is also included in this.

(3) Taking a false oath is prohibited (haram) and among the major sins (kabair), as has been mentioned in other ahadith.
