Hadith 3600

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنْ يَكُ فِي شَيْءٍ فَفِي الرَّبْعَةِ ، وَالْمَرْأَةِ ، وَالْفَرَسِ " .
´It was narrated from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah said:` "If there are (omens) in anything, they are in houses, women and horses."

Brief Explanation
1؎: It appears that, according to Imam Nasa'i as well, the preferred wording is this: if misfortune (nuhusat) could exist in anything, it would have been in these things. This is because, in the first two hadiths, he cited the narration of «الشؤم مطلقاً», and at the end, by presenting the hadith of Jabir, he gave his own verdict. In this way, this example should be considered an excellent illustration of Imam Nasa'i's method of preference (tarjih).
