´It was narrated from Ayyub, from Al-Hasan, from Abu Hurairah, that the Prophet said:` "Women who seek divorce and Khul' are like the female hypocrites." Al-Hasan said: "I did not hear it from anyone other than Abu Hurairah."

(1) The hearing (sama‘) of Hasan al-Basri rahimahullah from Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu is a matter of scholarly disagreement. Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah is among those who do not accept that he heard from Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu. However, the preferred and correct view is that his hearing from our master Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu is established. Shaykh Ahmad Shakir rahimahullah has discussed this issue in detail. See: (Musnad Ahmad, edited by Ahmad Shakir: 12/107–116; and Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba, Sharh Sunan al-Nasa’i: 29/75–82)
(2) “They are hypocrites”—meaning, despite being in the bond of marriage, they are ungrateful and remove their husbands’ covering from themselves. Just as a hypocrite, despite reciting the testimony of faith (kalimah), is insincere to Islam and strives to remove the garment of Islam, likewise, a woman’s demand for divorce without a valid reason is a sign of her being a hypocrite. However, if there is an excuse, then demanding divorce is permissible, and such a woman will not fall under this ruling.
