´Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:` "Look at how Allah diverts the insults and curses of Quraish from me. They insult 'Mudhammam' and curse 'Mudhammam' -but I am Muhammad."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
Commentary:
When the Quraysh of Makkah failed in their schemes, they would, burning with rage, begin to speak ill of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). However, at the time of cursing and reviling, instead of using the name Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), they would use the word "Mudhammam," because the meaning of "Muhammad" is "the one who is praised by all." If they were to abuse him while calling him Muhammad, it would be a combination of opposites. In any case, they did not want to address him with such a good name, so they would replace the word Muhammad with Mudhammam and then hurl insults. In this way, Allah Ta'ala protected your (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) name from being subjected to abuse. The intention of the Imam (rahimahullah) is that the meaning of a word cannot be taken in such a way that it conveys a meaning which, in any respect, cannot be understood from it—just as the meaning of Mudhammam can never, in any way, be Muhammad. Here, intention will not suffice. Similarly, one cannot intend divorce (talaq) by uttering a word that, in no way, conveys the meaning of divorce, even if the intention is indeed divorce. For example, if someone says, "I have given you a gift," and intends divorce by it, this is not possible.

Hadith Commentary:
The disbelievers of Arabia, out of enmity, would not call you Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but instead, in opposition, would address you by the name "Mudhammam," meaning "the one who is condemned, the evil one." You (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that "Mudhammam is not my name; the curses they utter will fall upon the one who is called Mudhammam."
Hafiz (rahimahullah) has said that there are other names of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that have been reported, such as Ra'uf, Rahim, Shahid, Bashir, Nadhir, Mubin, Da'i ila Allah, Siraj Munir, Mudhakkir, Rahmah, Ni'mah, Hadi, Shahid, Amin, Muzzammil, Muddathir, Mutawakkil, Mukhtar, Mustafa, Shafi', Mushaffa', Sadiq, Musaddaq, and so on.
Some have said that the names of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reach up to ninety-nine, just like the Most Beautiful Names (Asma' al-Husna), and if one searches further, even more can be found (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Regarding the blessed name Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Hafiz (rahimahullah) states:
"That is, the one who is praised time after time, or the one in whom praiseworthy qualities are perfected." Qadi 'Iyad said:
"The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was Ahmad before he was Muhammad, as occurred in reality, because the name Ahmad appeared in the previous scriptures, and the name Muhammad appeared in the Noble Qur'an. This is because he praised his Lord before people praised him, and likewise in the Hereafter, he will praise his Lord, so he will be granted intercession, and then people will praise him. He has been distinguished with Surah Muhammad, the Banner of Praise (Liwa' al-Hamd), the Praiseworthy Station (al-Maqam al-Mahmud), and it has been legislated for him to praise (Allah) after eating and drinking, after supplication, and upon returning from travel. His ummah has been named 'the ones who praise much' (al-Hammadin). Thus, all meanings and types of praise have been gathered for him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)." (Fath al-Bari)

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The disbelievers of Quraysh, due to the intensity of their enmity, did not refer to you by the name Muhammad, because this name highlights the aspect of your praise and commendation. Its meaning is "one possessing very good qualities." This was very unpleasant for them, so instead of calling you Muhammad, they would call you "Mudhammam," even though your name was not Mudhammam, nor did people know you by this name. Therefore, whatever they said about you in reference to this name, Allah the Exalted would turn it away from you. Thus, the wife of Abu Lahab used to say:
We bear enmity towards Mudhammam.
We reject his religion.
And we disobey his command.
➋
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes:
Imam al-Nasa'i rahimahullah has derived from this hadith that if a person utters such words that are contrary to divorce or separation, and intends divorce by them, then divorce will not take place.
For example, if someone says to his wife, "You eat," and by this he intends divorce, then the woman will not be divorced, because "eating" cannot be interpreted as divorce.
Similarly, if someone interprets Muhammad as Mudhammam, then by reviling Mudhammam, no reproach will fall upon the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

Benefit:
From this hadith, it is understood that the one who is insulted is not affected by the insult; rather, the sin is incurred by the one who utters the insult. Insulting is absolutely forbidden, and it is prohibited to insult even Satan or any animal. It is unfortunate that nowadays insults are uttered in every conversation. People should be admonished for this, and one should exercise self-control regarding the use of insults.
