‘Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that one night I found the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) missing. I thought he might have gone to one of his wives. I started searching for him, then I returned and saw that he was in bowing or prostration, and he was saying: «سبحانك و بحمدك لا إله إلا أنت» I said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, you are doing something while I was thinking something else.’
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) "Did not feel it"—That is, when she suddenly woke up from sleep, you were not present beside her. You were reciting the prayer softly so that her sleep would not be disturbed. She thought that you were not in the room. She went out of the chamber and listened carefully to see if your voice could be heard from any of the chambers.
(2) "In bowing (ruku‘) or prostration (sujud)"—That is, upon her return, you realized that she had been searching for you, so you began to recite in a louder voice. Since the mentioned supplication can only be made in bowing or prostration, she deduced that you were in bowing or prostration.
